Possible futures - radio documentary workshop with Flaviu Petean

workshop — 2.11.2021 16:00

<< POSSIBLE FUTURES >> is a workshop exploring the creative techniques and processes behind radio broadcasts and documentaries. Thematically, we will focus on climate change and our subjective experience of the uncertainty of the future, of living in a growing city, of visible and invisible urban pollution, while exploring possibilities for inventing desirable futures.
The workshop is part of << AGAINST CYSISM>> , the 6th edition of Focus Atelier. Beyond cynical, handy and passive criticism, we ask what gives us dignity, hope and freedom?
Participation in the workshop is free of charge subject to availability and selection. The number of participants will be decided following the applications received.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
The workshop aims to explore the subjective relationship of participants and inhabitants of Cluj with the phenomenon of climate change. Starting from Sloterdijk’s statement “Because everything has become problematic, everything has at the same time entered the zone of indifference”, we reflect on the uncertainty of the future in the era of climate change and the ways in which we as individuals and communities encounter these changes. We also seek to understand who produces the discourses of pollution and adaptation and how they are perceived in local communities.
Part of the workshop will focus on analysing the correspondence between perceptions, behaviours, discourses and climate reality. We will try to understand how responsibility for climate change is passed from one social category to another. For this analysis, we will make a foray into the world of environmental sociology and local issues in Cluj.
We will continue with an analysis of the representation of the topic in the local press, with a focus on radio stations in Cluj, in order to understand what kind of messages are transmitted, in what tone, to whom they are addressed, thus preparing the ground for the live-radio part of the workshop. We will then continue with the preparation, production and editing of interviews and narratives on the chosen theme. In this part we will learn to work with recording tools, editing software, studio equipment, music production tools. In the final part, we get acquainted with the live radio experience by working together on jingles, promos, texts for social platforms and online environment. As working spaces, we will be swinging between EBS Radio studios, Tranzit House and Cirkular, a recording and music production studio in the city.
The end result will be an episodic audio documentary, with each participant contributing an episode. Depending on the topics of interest and their approaches, teams may be formed. Thus, an episode can be produced by one team. The content will be recorded by the participants, depending on their research and interests: interviews, own recordings, field/environmental recordings, music and others. The audio documentary will be presented on EBS Radio, together with discussions about the process and impressions at the end of the experience.
