Let's talk about gas / Zine launch and stories about resistance

discussions — 13.9.2022 16:00

Let’s talk about gas! We invite you on 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟑 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟗:𝟎𝟎 at Casa Tranzit, Baritiu street, nr 16, Cluj Napoca.
→ Methane gas pollutes and causes climate change.
→ Methane gas fuels wars.
→ Black Sea gas is not an emergency solution to the energy crisis we face.
→ #nomoregas
In the context of the war in Ukraine and the energy emergency, statements like these make us sound like we are resisting the only possible solution. We want to challenge this view and show that the future still depends on us, how we look at it and what resources we put into play. The fossil fuel era is coming to an end and this is creating one of the densest geo-political contexts yet. Without wanting (and being able) to be exhaustive, we propose to start here:

We wrote about how the fossil gas industry is building its future. We have shown how this directly affects the environment and how gas contributes to the current climate crisis, but also to the current geo-political conflicts. We looked at the lies on which all this is based, and how politicians are decisively aligned with the future plans of capital, being carefully coordinated (and corrupted) by the lobbying industry. This top-down coordination of our energy, but also of our environmental and social futures, is extremely destructive. We want to tell you about it, bring you a copy of our text and discuss together what should be done.
This presentation will be held in Romanian.

In the second part of our meeting we will have Anthony with us who will tell us about the struggle of resistance against similar plans in the U.S. The eight years of the Obama administration are generally seen as a time of environmental progress in the U.S. Yet despite joining the Paris Agreement and blocking two major oil pipeline projects, President Obama also promoted huge expansions of methane gas and oil production in the U.S. This presentation will focus on one campaign against methane gas infrastructure in the northeast U.S. and the lessons it can provide for future climate justice activism.
This presentation will be held in English.

The Gastivists Collective is a small team of motivated people active in a variety of climate and oppression struggles in different countries. We want to create connections between activist groups and help develop a movement that will stop the gas and lead to an energy transition. We use gas as a lens to fight the many other injustices that are perpetuated by the fossil fuel industry. Our call for climate justice is also a call for justice for all oppressed groups. We recognize that climate change is embedded in the neo-colonial capitalist system and all the other oppressions that this system causes, such as racism, misogyny, homophobia and xenophobia. We focus on grassroots activism because of its potential to create truly new spaces, dialogues and ways of working that challenge the system. And we focus on the emotions caused by the climate crisis because we feel that only by discussing them can we really come together.
At the threshold of any possible future we claim our collective contribution.
