This film is a remake of the 1921 silent movie Dracula’s Death, produced a year before Murnau’s famous Nosferatu. The original film was lost during World War II, but students at Sapientia University reimagined it, drawing inspiration from a novel of the same title published three years after the film’s release. The script, diverging from Bram Stoker’s story, unfolds as a series of nightmares and events set in an insane asylum where Dracula is one of the patients.

Szatmári Loretta: Prelude - short film, 2023, 8’44’’ (Felirat: ENG)
Hugging, caressing, touch on the hair. Then a kiss, but if the rest was fine, why not this? If something bothers you, why not do something about it? It’s not that I’m left with a mental scar, I just might be different if this hadn’t happened to me. I don’t think so, but others think so. Still others think it’s my fault because I shouldn’t have let it happen. I beg you, how old was I?!

Ana teaches literature, has a good relationship with her students and colleagues and is a respected high school teacher. She is unexpectedly denounced by one of her parents for recommending a film about the lives of two 19th century French poets, Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, criticizing the physical and emotional relationship between the two men. The teacher’s appeal triggers a chain reaction that gradually turns her colleagues and the school principal against her. The increasingly harsh treatment makes her work impossible and tests her human relationships.

A random post on Facebook: “A few rolls of film have been found abandoned for decades somewhere in an old attic!” Digitizing the film brings to light family footage: ordinary home scenes, birthdays, holidays, visits, outings. The search for those who appear in the footage is thrilling, and the result is an immersion in time, with family stories and dramas painted in the visual aesthetic of 8mm film.

In Romania, in Transylvania, around a quarter of the population of the Székelykeresztúr region is Roma. 10% of them live in extreme poverty, in settlements. Compared to other Szekler regions, coexistence around Székelykeresztúr is relatively peaceful. There are common institutions, mixed marriages are not unusual. However, exclusion is still present and almost all Roma have in common the desire to get rid of it. But the ways of breaking free are many and varied. Some people rely on tradition to preserve their separateness. Some would unite the Roma. Many seek to assimilate with the majority, or to experience equality in the same spaces as the majority. Almost all of them have some form of dual Roma-Hungarian identity. These are their stories.
