Paulo Freire: Az elnyomottak pedagógiája

book launch — 5.4.2025 15:00

We would like to welcome you to our book launch on 5 April, where we will be discussing the Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire’s book, The Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which created a new pedagogical movement at the end of the 20th century. Our guests are Edina Hart (Mentés másként), György Mészáros (ELTE). Moderator: Árpád Kulcsár.

The Pedagogy of the Oppressed is one of the founding works of critical pedagogy or critical education. Thanks to Laura Lukács’s translation, the Hungarian edition was published in 2024 by Open Books, within the Bázis Könyvek series. The publication of this translation is, in our opinion, a milestone, as it serves as an important source for sharing the theoretical and methodological knowledge of critical pedagogy within the Hungarian-speaking sphere. The volume can be both a source for academic interest in educational science and also a handbook for any person or group involved in pedagogy and education outside of institutions - thus becoming a productive tool for any organization or movement interested in individual and collective empowerment and liberation.

We are living in times when the forces of oppression are gaining more and more ground around us, increasingly narrowing the space for those working for a better tomorrow, for social ecosystems that can transcend capitalism. But this situation is also a call for us to try to find forms of active resistance and self-organising, starting from our daily lives to our workplaces, that can offer an alternative to the existing, dominant relations, by denying and overcoming them.

The event will be held in Hungarian.
