Cultural (Re)conversion | Tranzit Days XXVIII

roundtable discussion — 11.10.2025 14:00

Tranzit House is Romania’s first example of reintegrating a former synagogue into public use by transforming it into an independent cultural center.Since 1997, the Tranzit Foundation has preserved the character and memory of the building, restoring and reusing it for this purpose.

The discussion with our guests continues a series of debates organized by the Tranzit Foundation on the (re)conversion of buildings — particularly those that can host cultural activities—and on the needs of the cultural sector in relation to a possible framework of support at the local and national level, through public policies and concrete measures.

Saturday’s debate places the topic of conversion in a broader context, as a recurring practice sustainedby initiatives constantly seeking space, but also as an expression of the value that society attributes to cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible.

We will also discuss European efforts to extend the lifespan of buildings through renovation and conversion — processes that enhance their cultural value, contribute to resource conservation, and foster increasingly rigorous standards of intervention. A relevant current example is the House Europe! Initiative.

From buildings, the discussion will expand to neighborhoods and cities, whose vitality growsthe reuse of built heritage and the preservation of affective memory. At the same time, recent examples from across Europe show how office spaces are being transformed into collective housing, adapting to new social needs.

The case of Tranzit House remains a litmus test for assessing the chances of urban development based on consensual decisions between the city and the communities involved.

This edition starts from the concept of 𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 – understood as a real space (not utopian, meaning “without place”), yet layered with symbolic meanings and potentialities that reflect the society it belongs to.

We celebrate 28 years of Casa Tranzit through music, performances, round tables, book launches, and exhibitions!
